Contributions and new uses of 5G

5G is the 5th generation of mobile networks. It is disruptive technology compared to that which is currently used: it not only provides increased speeds but also opens up the perspective of new uses. Thus, phone communications and internet access will be completed by so-called “vertical” uses, in particular for the internet of things or certain critical uses. 

 

 

 

Advantages

  • Speed5G promises speeds up to 10 times higher than 4G.

  • Latency: being divided by 10, latency (response times) opens up perspectives that will upset uses, in particular professional.
  • Density: 5G will offer connection density that will multiply the number of objects connected to the network by 10. 

New uses

5G is presented as the new generation of mobile network infrastructure which will allow a jump in performances and the possibility of highly diverse uses.

The definition of the fifth generation mobile (5G) is centred around 3 major use scenarios (see ITU-R M.2083 report):

  • very high speed mobile (> 1 Gbit/s), 
  • mass communications between machines (home automation, smart cities, internet of things, etc.) 
  • and ultra-reliable communications with very low latency (industrial applications, safety, ITS, etc.). 

 

5G can be used in a wide variety of sectors (connected vehicles, healthcare, energy, industry, etc.). This involves increased network security control and expected gains in terms if quality of service, adaptability and low latency. 5G communication should therefore meet the needs of connected vehicles, industrial applications or more generally the internet of things.
